Quarter 3. Week 5. March2-6, 2020

We made it through a full week. It’s been a while since we’ve had all 5 days! We also made it through all our Fun Run parties and had a fantastic time spraying each other with silly string.

Wednesday is the field trip to the courthouse. This is a working courthouse so I ask that you help your student to dress appropriately (business casual is OK, but no holes in jeans, shorts, leggings, hats, etc.) and remember to be respectful while we are visiting this important place of our government. Please sign the permission slip, if you haven’t already and remember that we will not be back in time for hot lunch. We will be able to eat lunch after the field trip!

Progress reports went home today. Please be sure to take a look and talk to your student about how they may improve the grades in the next 3 weeks. Many of the grades are low due to missing assignments and late work. If your student still has missing work there is also a missing assignment sheet in the folder. AR is another reason the reading comprehension grade is low. They do have until the end of the quarter (and 125% by March 18 if they want to make it into the party) to get that grade up. Please encourage them to read and take AR quizzes.

Congratulations, again, Riggan Class! We won another party from the Fun Run. This time we will have a root beer float and silly string party. The date is yet to be set, but it will be fun for sure! Great job getting sponsors for your running this month! We also had the individual top seller in our class. Congratulations, Sophie Thompson! Your $25 gift card is ready for you in the school office!

Please join us on Tuesday morning at 8:30. As a school, we are setting aside some time to worship and pray. We will be led by Mrs. Imel and Mrs. Kraft. The ceremony will be about 10 minutes right outside on the blacktop! All are welcome!

This week we will be doing some final touches on projects, cleaning our desks, lockers, and cubbies and generally getting ready for you to come to visit! The class has been working hard all year and we would love you and your family (or friends who feel like family) to come to see our work. Stop by the Art show in the church lobby and our classroom on Thursday night! It is a fun night and the kids are encouraged to come to show you around the campus! I look forward to seeing you all and sharing a smile!

Quarter 3. Week 4: February 11-14, 2020

What a fun day we had on Friday running to raise money for our school. It is always fun to see the healthy competitive side come out in the kids! Thank you so much for helping our kids get their donations and encouraging them to run their hearts out!

This week we will start our new book club book. It is a mystery. Please encourage the kids to stay with the class as we read it together (rereading the chapter and journaling is all they should be doing at home). It is always fun to learn and discover the steps of this mystery together and nothing is sadder than when a student skips ahead and reveals the ending. Thank you for helping us enjoy this mystery as a class!!

Also this week we will be walking over for a fun field trip. We have a few students from TLCS and TLCMS in this CYT production of Cinderella. It is so fun to see them use their talents! If you signed up to chaperone, you should have gotten an email from Mrs. Schertz. Thank you for volunteering to help us walk our kids safely across the parking lot!

This Friday is Valentine’s Day. We do not have a party in our fifth-grade class. However, if your student wants to share something with their classmates they may. No one is obligated to participate.  The class will be given extra time during closing (our plan and pack time) to hand them out. I ask only that if they do bring something they bring something for every member of the class. It is not fair to bring something for only one or two people and forget everyone else. I have a list here.

Finally, now that you are done with the President Biography you might be wondering what to do with it. How about considering a donation to the classroom? Some of our students were so intrigued by the various presidents that they would love to read more. Those book donations would be very helpful! Thank you!

What’s Happening in Music Class! January Letter to Parents for Mrs. Kraft

Over winter break we celebrated a new decade! We started off our first week back going 100 years back in time into the year 1920. We learned that Jazz was the popular style of music for its musical improvisation. We learned about famous composers like Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and George Gershwin. Then we jumped into the next decade, the 1930’s, where swing jazz became popular. In the 1940’s country music became popular for the first time, and we listened to the 1940’s “You are my Sunshine” by Jimmie Davis. Other artists we focused on, were Bing Crosby “Zip-a-dee-doo-dah” and first ever female jazz singer, Billie Holiday. In our last couple of weeks in January, the students and I learned about 1950’s artists Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley. 1960’s Motown artists; Stevie Wonder and The Jackson Five. We finished our study on musical decades with the 1970’s disco era and got the chance to show off our best disco moves in class. It has been incredible to go back into time and see how culture and music has changed throughout the years. It is interesting to see how much of the music we listen to today has been influenced by the music of our past!

Quarter 3, Week 3: February 3-7, 2020

Congratulations, Riggan Class!!! You won the party for having the first class to all sign up for the fun run!! We will have a popcorn and cocoa party in a few weeks!! You know what would also be great? A second party! If we can be the class to bring in one of the top three total pledges we can win a second party! We are currently tied for third place. So if we just get a few more pledges we might be able to win a second party! So get those pledges coming in! Seriously though, the money this year goes to updating our chrome books, the teacher technology, the security technology and personnel, the Spanish program as well as the STEAM program at our school. All are great causes, so keep those pledges coming and thank you for signing your students up for this fun event!

Next week we will begin researching and planning our persuasive writing essay in Writing class. Your students may need your help with the research portion. Some will want to set up interviews with experts and you will need to help them get to those interviews. Some may want to do a poll among adults as well. This is a fun project because they get to write about something they care about and possibly bring change in our community!

TLCS registration for next year is about to begin. If you are interested in registering for next year you get priority and can register starting Monday. If you are on the fence and want a middle school mom’s opinion of TLCMS please feel free to email me any questions. My son is currently an 8th grader and has gone all 3 years here. I will be honest and answer all your questions to the best of my ability!

We have one more week to turn in used shoes for charity. If you have any still usable, but unwanted shoes please bring them in to the school office. We are bagging and sending them out next week!

I will be sending in a scholastic order on Friday. Your students have the papers in their Friday folder or you can go online to order scholastic books. Our class code is P7MQL.
