September 30-October 4, 2019

Picture day is Monday. We have a 9:45 time slot, so please have your student come to school ready for pictures! If you are wanting a sibling picture, please contact the office as soon as possible to get on the list. More information about ordering will be sent out in the next few weeks.

We have a large history project coming up as well as a final typed writing assignment due soon. Next week we will get each student signed into a google classroom account and teach them how to submit their documents or slide presentations. They will have time to work on research, typing and creating their presentation in class, however, they may need time at home as well. They will need to be able to access the internet, connect to their school email account and then connect to their google classroom account. If this will be a difficulty in your home, please let me know as soon as possible. If you need instructions on how to help your student get into their google classroom account, please let me know and I will email the directions.

Friday is our annual Family Movie Night. If you haven’t joined us for Movie Night you are missing out. It is a fun night where we all bring beach chairs and watch a movie on the lower blacktop “big screen”. The movie this year is “The Secret Life of Pets 2”. Popcorn and hot chocolate will be provided, but bring your dinner and join us for the fun! The movie starts around 7, or as soon as it is dark enough. See you then!!

Don’t stop selling your Drive 4 Schools tickets. The first week we were in 3rd place, but last week we lost to the other fifth-grade class. If you haven’t sold your tickets, you still have time. If you have, come on in to the office and get some more. Not only is it fun for our class to win a free party, but TLCS gets to keep every penny of the sales! Win-win, if you ask me!! So keep on selling!

Finally, this week is the assessment week for the first unit in Reading. It’s a great week for us to really see what our students are retaining. With that there will be less formal homework (no vocab, or spelling) and therefore is a great week to focus on meeting AR goals. Please have your student bring an AR book to class every day and be using some of their 50 minutes of homework time to take some AR quizzes and read some more!

None of the bonus will be tested.

September 23-27, 2019

Can you believe we are halfway through the first quarter? This is a great year so far. The students are growing in their independence and responsibility! I am so proud of them. Being that it is the halfway mark, progress reports will be coming home on Thursday in the “Friday Folder”. You are always welcome to check grades on gradelink, but this is another way to keep an eye on the progress your student is making.

I hope you all enjoy your three day weekend next week. Students will be getting a “missing work report” on Thursday. This long weekend is a great opportunity to work on that list and do some AR reading!

Keep selling those Drive For Schools tickets! If you need more you can call the office. At this point, the kindergarten classes are ahead of our class. But we still have time! Keep selling!!

We are starting a new book club book on Tuesday! This book is a fantastic historical fiction. The students will be bringing the book home to read and/or re-read sections and complete their journal. Please help them to remember to return it every day to school!

September 16-20, 2019

Here we are, starting our fifth week of fifth grade. It was a bumpy start for some, but we are getting into the patterns and growing together as a class. I am so blessed by the kindness, compassion, and diligence among these students. Thank you for bringing them to TLCS and letting me be their teacher!

Drive for Schools has started and we already have so many marbles in our jar! I am so excited. I would love to win the class prize and be able to have a special party to celebrate. So keep selling those tickets. If you need more, just stop by the office and grab some.

This week we kick off our first big buddy week. We are doing things a bit differently this year. Instead of fifth grade having a younger buddy class, we actually get to have monthly hang out sessions with the middle schoolers. I am so excited about our first session; we will kick it off with a fun pirate party to celebrate “speak like a pirate day”!!

September 9-13, 2019

Week three is under our belts and we are really getting into the swing of things. Often it takes 3-4 weeks to really get the hang of what is required of fifth grade. The workload, turning in papers (with their name and number on it) and constant movement in fifth grade can be hard to get used to. However, I assure you they will get it and by the end of week 4, they will start to shine! We have a great group of kids and I am confident they will rise to the challenge!

That being said, please do check in with your student to see that they are getting their work completed and turned in. I will print and hand out a missing assignment sheet each Thursday. This helps to keep on top of the work. If they don’t have anything missing they get a ticket, which they seem to want! If the whole class has a week without any missing assignment sheets passed out I will instantly give them extra recess time. Hopefully, that will motivate them some!!

There is a place to go if your student is in need of a reminder for their math work each day. Simply go to http://www.pearsonrealize.com to access a digital copy of our student math workbook, watch instructional videos, and play math games. (Please note they may not print another copy of the workbook page, but they can see it online.) Once at the website they can sign in with Username: each student should know their username and use the Password: twinlakes123

Thank you to my special amazon and scholastic fairies. I am so blessed to have these classroom supplies and can’t wait to share them with the class!!
