Q2 W4: November 26-30, 2018

Hello all. I do hope you are enjoying your Thanksgiving break. I enjoyed our write on demand from Tuesday where everyone shared their favorite family traditions. One thing is for sure, no matter what kind of food we serve, we all love the feasts involved in Thanksgiving!

This week is another exciting week in the fifth-grade classes. We will be going on our first field trip of the school year. The tech museum is a great jump start to our science fair preparations! Be sure to plan on an early arrival on Tuesday so we can load up and head over the hill quickly!

We also have our first ever middle school preview day. The students have chosen their electives and are ready to learn from our fabulous middle school teachers! Again, this is an early day for us. We need to meet out in front of the sanctuary building! I will be there ready to lead your students on this exciting journey!

Finally, plan to come with questions ready on Thursday night (the 29th) at the vision night. The teachers, Mrs. Imel, some students, some parents, and Mrs. Schertz and I will be there to answer any questions you may have. All questions welcome! If you know of someone thinking about what to do for middle school, please invite them to join as well! All are welcome!

Q2 W2: November 12-16, 2018

It was so great getting to sit with each of you last week. Although I prefer hanging with my 10-12-year-olds, I enjoyed getting to see the kids through your eyes for a while! Thank you all for taking the time to come to talk with me.

This week is our English/Language Arts assessment week. The students will have limited homework this week due to the testing in class. This is a great time to focus on those things that we don’t get time for other days. For example, working on math facts (old fashion flash cards works great), practice typing, reading AR books or getting started on those states and capitals are all great ideas!

We are having a Thanksgiving Party on Tuesday, November 20th. We are looking for a few people to bring some already popped popcorn, some pretzels, some jelly beans, some bread, and some water bottles. If you are interested in providing one of these items please email me what you’d like to bring and drop it off the morning of the 20th!

Spelling List:

Look back over the past 5 weeks and study all the words to determine which ones are hard for you.

Second Quarter Starts Now!

Congratulations! You have all made it one-quarter of the way through fifth grade! Give yourselves a round of applause! As I have said multiple times to the student and to you at Back to School Night, “I’m not going to lie, fifth grade is hard!”

I am looking forward to meeting with each of you at the parent-teacher conferences next week. I love getting the opportunity to brag on our kids and point out ways we can help them grow more! Please be sure to check your time and arrive a few minutes early. There will be examples of the three big projects that they will be doing throughout the rest of fifth grade in the hall for you to check out.

We have a field trip coming. We are going to the Tech Museum in San Jose. This is our science fair kick-off trip (and one of my favorites)! Electronic permission slips will be coming out next week. We do have a limited number of chaperone tickets available, however, the Tech will sell discounted tickets to any parents who just want to tag along!

With the new quarter, there will be some new policies. Please note there will no longer be tech decks (the little skateboard toys) or little toys of any kind allowed at recess or lunch recess. Also, in our class, the late policy (as stated in the student handbook) will begin to be enforced. So please, encourage your student to complete their homework on time!
