Q1 W7: October 1-5

I hope you all have a fantastic 4 day weekend. I plan on learning a lot and coming back on Monday with new ideas and ready to make this class an even better learning place for our fifth graders! But I sure will miss this lively class!

We have a big-ish project coming up for history. We will do much of the research for the project in class, but they will need to make a poster at home to complete the project. I HIGHLY recommend going to the dollar store and getting a 50 cent board. The final project is due Monday, October 8th. The students were given their explorer and the rubric on Wednesday, September 26th.

Progress reports were handed out on Wednesday. I met with each student to see if they had any questions or concerns. Many of the lower than hoped for grades is a direct result of missing assignments. However, there were some low math grades that were unexpected. I’d like to address a few things real quick. First, there is only one quiz represented there. Our students will have a few more quizzes and at least one test in the next few weeks, leading up to the end of the quarter. Second, there is a chance to re-do work to raise the grade. If your student earns a low score on a math assignment they are allowed to re-do that assignment for up to 100%. Any quizzes and tests may be fixed for up to 75% of the original points. If you have any questions feel free to contact either Mrs. Ando or myself.

Q1 W6: September 24-26

Can you believe we are half way through the first quarter? This is a great year so far. The students are growing in their independence and responsibility! I am so proud of them.

I hope you all enjoy your four day weekend next week. Students will be getting a “missing work report” on Wednesday. This long weekend is a great opportunity to work on that list and/or do some AR reading!

Keep selling those Drive For Schools tickets! If you need more you can call the office.

We are starting a new book club book on Monday! This book is a fantastic historical fiction. The students will be bringing the book home to read and/or re-read sections and complete their journal. Please help them to remember to return it every day to school!

Q1 W5: September 17-21, 2018

It is hard to believe we are almost halfway through the first quarter. The kids are growing and maturing so much already. It is going to be a great year.

Pictures are on Monday for our class. We will have a 10:30 spot, so if your students want to “beautify” themselves at recess instead of coming dressed up they may!

Grades have started to be entered into Gradelink this week. You may contact the office if you aren’t sure how to access your account. As grades have started to be entered, missing work is starting to be noticed. Most of our students are doing great at getting their work completed and turned in. Missing assignments lists go out every Thursday. Please check with your student to see if there is any missing work they need help completing or locating. Thanks!

Here’s to a fantastic week 5!! Image result for high five emoji

Quarter 1 Week 4: September 10-14, 2018

It may have been a short week, but we did a lot in fifth grade. We learned more about the 4 American Indian regions, how to tell time using the sun and how to use various strategies in math and writing. I hope the kids are coming home sharing all the fun with you too!

STAR tests have been done and goals have been set. I was so proud of each student as they came up and either accepted my challenge or asked for a higher challenge. You have such confident and hard working children! You should be proud! The end of AR is October 31st. Please encourage them to read and take quizzes to meet the goals they’ve set for themselves.

You will notice on the planner (and below) that we are requesting the students bring in an eraser for their white-board desks. We are using a lot of tissues and time without them. You don’t need to go out to a store to buy a real eraser. They go bad quickly anyway! I highly recommend you bring a sock. We all have at least one unmatched sock at home. Those are perfect for our purposes (and can be cleaned easily!). Thanks!

Finally, this week grades will start to be entered into gradelink. I will be issuing a missing assignments list every Thursday for the rest of the quarter. They will have until the following Monday morning to get any missing work turned in.
