Q4W3: April 23-27, 2018

We made it! We had our long week of Terra Nova testing and the kids did fantastically. Thank you all for being here on time each day.

For the next 5 weeks, spelling will be different than it has been all year. On Monday your student will get a menu to choose from. They need to complete two things on that menu using that week’s spelling list.  They will have some time in class, but they may need some encouragement at home as well.

Your student found out their state on Thursday. They have the packet of instructions and a rubric for how the model will be graded. You may begin this weekend. Dream big! Many are already coming up with clever and unique materials. I am so excited to see what they come up with!

Q4W2: April 16-20, 2018

This is a big week in fifth grade. Terra Nova tests are all week: Monday through Friday. Many of the tests begin first thing in the morning, so please be sure to be at school on time. If your child arrives during a test they will not be allowed into the classroom and will have to take the test at another time. So please be here on time.

The students have been told that their only responsibility for the Terra Nova’s is to do their BEST, get their REST, and eat a good BREAKFAST.  I also highly recommend a good, healthy snack be sent with the kids each day too. Testing can be quite a workout and hunger always takes over!

This is a great week to read for AR. The goals have been set and quizzes can start. Since there will be little homework, reading each night is a great idea!

This week is also the week that many fifth grade parents anticipate all year long. This week your student will be given their state to begin researching. As soon as they find out their state, it is a great time to begin talking about and dreaming up the final project! Each student will have a different state, so this weekend they should start coming up with a top 5 (or even 10) list for Thursday’s fun states reveal! (No one will be given California!)

Our last book club starts this week as well. The science fiction book “The Giver” is a challenging book both academically and socially. Many topics will come up in this book that relates to the real world. It is always fun to watch our fifth graders grow in their appreciation for their families and community as a result of reading this book. Much of the book will be read in class, but they will be taking notes and answering journal questions as homework.

Quarter 4. Week 1. April 9-13

You have now made it 3/4 of the way through fifth grade! It has been a fun, yet sometimes bumpy, journey. I am so proud of these kids and I hope you are too!

The fourth quarter is my favorite quarter. We change study all the 50 states and their capitals. We get to read a science fiction book in the book club. We will study health and what makes us unique. Finally, the quarter ends with a US States Tour, a Bible Wax Museum, and a promotion/talent show. It’s a busy, but crazy fun quarter!
