Week 32: April 24-28, 2017

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a restful week break! I am looking forward to hearing all the wonderful things the kids did while they were away.

The next 6 weeks are going to rush by in a whirlwind. We are starting a new science unit, memorizing the locations and spellings of all 50 states and 50 capitals and preparing and creating wonderful state reports! So be prepared for a busy season to begin!

This week is our annual “Spiritual Emphasis Week” for fourth and fifth graders. Pastor Mark will be sharing real life tips to help our students as they transition into the next phase of life: middle school! We will be meeting with Pastor Mark Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Be sure to ask your student what stories Pastor Mark shared with them those days!

Spelling and History will be combined for the rest of the school year. The students will be given the names of states and their capitals to be able to spell correctly on the end of the week’s spelling test. This test is different, however. They will not be hearing the word and have to spell it. Instead they will be given a map of the region for that week with lines for them to place the state capital and state in the correct place all while spelling the names correctly. Each week they will be given a region to study. This week the region is the North East Region. There are 11 states and their capitals (22 names in all) to learn how to spell and where they are located. The test will be graded twice. Once for spelling (worth 22 points in the spelling grade) and again for history (the placement of the states and capitals is also worth 22 points for the history/social studies grade). I have listed the names below for you to help with the spelling practice at home.

Your student chose their state to study before we went on break. Monday we will be discussing what information they need to have for the end of the unit report and 3-D display. Most of the researching and all of the creation will be done at home. Please be sure to ask them to show you the guidelines so you know how to plan and help them create their state masterpiece.

Week 31: April 10-14

One more week and then the much needed time of rest begins! However, this is a big week in fifth grade. Terra Nova tests are Monday through Thursday this week. Many of them begin first thing in the morning, so please be sure to be at school on time. If your child arrives during a test they will not be allowed into the classroom and will have to take the test at another time. So please be here on time.

The students have been told that their only responsibility for the Terra Nova’s is to do their best, get their rest, and eat a good breakfast.  I also highly recommend a good, healthy snack be sent with the kids each day too. Testing can me quite a workout and hunger always takes over!

This is a great week to get those missing assignments finished and read for AR.

There will be a new debate this week, however the students will have plenty of time to research in class. They may ask questions at home as part of a poll, but it shouldn’t take more than a few minutes! We also have a science quiz this week to finish up the unit we’ve been doing. The students spent most of last week studying for the quiz and will have 3 days of studying in class this week before Friday’s quiz. Again, there shouldn’t be any take home studying unless the students just love science and want to read more.

This week is also the week that many fifth grade parents anticipate all year long. This week your student will be given their state to begin researching. You not required to begin research during the spring break, but it is a great time to begin talking about and dreaming up the final project! Each student will have a different state, so now is a good time to start having them come up with a top 10 (or even 15) list for Wednesday’s fun states reveal! (No one will be given California!)
