Week 24: February 21-24

Open House is coming! It is so fun to get to show off all that fifth grade has been up to. Please stop in to your classroom to see all the hard work your student has completed! You may also go look at all the middle school has been up to and get a glimpse of what next year might look like! And don’t miss the art show in the sanctuary.

This week we will be working on a comic strip in class for history. The students should have plenty time in class, but if it’s not done by Wednesday, it may come home for homework. I am planning to display these comic strips on Thursday so Thursday is a hard due date!

Week 23: February 13-17

February is half over. It’s so hard to believe how fast this third quarter is going. The students have done several projects, presentations and learns a lot of new things. Most importantly, the fifth grade has been learning how to be supportive, encouraging members of their classroom community. I am proud of the work they are doing in this area. We are still learning, but we are growing and it’s exciting to see.

This next week is Valentines week. We will be meeting with our buddies for a brief Valentines get together. I’d love if your child could make their buddy a Valentine and bring it Tuesday. I will have a few extras in case they forget, but mine might not be as pretty or cool as they’d like.

Speaking of Valentines, we will have about a 15 minute card exchange on Tuesday. If your child wants to bring Valentines I request they bring one for every member of the class. I sent an email earlier this week with each student’s names. Please see that email while preparing the cards. Thank you.

Speech meet is coming! This year each child is allowed to make their own selection request. An email from Molly Craig went out with ideas Wednesday. Your child will have until next Wednesday to make the request of 3. We will let them know by the end of the week what their selection is so they can begin studying it. I recommend they have 3 copies: one for home, one for their binder and one for their desk. That way they can work on memorizing at anytime!

Finally, we are taking a break from assigned reading books this week. Every day the students will be allowed to read a book of their choice during Book Club time. Please be sure your student has a book that is in their reading level everyday for class.
