Week 6: September 26-30

Hello families. The Drive For Schools tickets came home today. Unfortunately there was a mix up and fifth grade just got ours this week. However, you do still have time to sell them.

You should have also received a printout of any missing assignments your student may be missing. Please check through their work, binder and backpack to see if they have it, but forgot to turn them in.

Friday you will be getting your student’s progress report. However, you are more than welcome to be checking your students assignments, grades and teacher comments on grade link at any time. As we talked about at Back To School Night, try to look at the overall grade more than the small individual grades.

A message from our music teacher

In our third week of music class we continued learning the hymn ‘Come Thou Fount’ with its original text. We are singing three verses and studying the language and meaning of the author’s words.

Every week we do a new tongue twister to help loosen our tongues and get them ready to sing. Ask your student to recite this week’s tongue twister. It’s a hoot!

We began learning the song ‘Somewhere Out There’ from An American Tale. The students laugh at the cheesy 80’s recording but when they start singing it themselves it’s like listening to a little lullaby and is precious (and gets stuck in your head!).

Week 5: Sept. 19-23

Wow. We are almost halfway through the first quarter of fifth grade. We are getting more used to our new homework schedule and very busy days in class. The students are consistently surprising me by their creativity and drive to learn!

Friday folders came home this week. You may have seen a missing assignments list. If your student is missing any work they will have that list in their folder on Friday. Please look through their work and talk with them about it. If you need a new copy of anything, please email me the description and I will do my best to get them a copy Monday.

Also in that Friday folder is a “family packet” for the topics in Math this new chapter. That packet is provided for you as a family to know what is being taught this chapter. It is also useful for extra study before the chapter test if your student needs a little extra work. It is not a required packet. If your student doesn’t need the extra practice they don’t need to do it. It is just there to help keep everyone in the loop.

This past week, Ms. Gilbert and I have started team teaching the fifth graders. She has taken all the math and I have taken the grammar and writing lessons. This week we will also start having the students move classrooms for their lessons (just like they will in middle school). Not only are these subjects our own personal strength subjects, but it helps prepare the kids for middle school. If you have any questions about math, feel free to still email me or write a note. If I can answer, I will. If I can’t, I will ask Ms. Gilbert and one of us will get back to you.
